On Father’s Day, we delight to celebrate our earthly fathers. Yet, we acknowledge that every earthly father has feet of clay. There is only one perfect Father.
Our creed calls Him the Father Almighty. Our Savior addresses this Almighty Father in an unprecedented way. He calls God Abba, which means “daddy” in Aramaic. Why does Jesus do this? He wants us to experience the same type of close and intimate relationship with God that He enjoys. He bids us to pray to the Father boldly and confidently, like a little child comes to a loving, approachable dad.
In his classic book Knowing God, J.I. Packer asks this question:
Who is a Christian? “This question can be answered in many ways, but the richest answer I know is that a Christian is one who has God for his Father.”
When you personally come to know this Father, you seek what He seeks. You desire what He desires. What is His supreme desire? The glory of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ (John 8:54). Let us prepare to worship our Father by glorifying His Son.
